Undergraduate Study and Research In Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (BMB):
(B.S. and B.A. Degree Programs)

BMB offers a rigorous and exciting major designed for motivated undergraduates who want a program that emphasizes faculty contact and hands-on research. All BMB majors have a faculty member as an academic advisor, but BMB students who do research also benefit from contact with a research advisor and a thesis committee. Many undergraduate students in the BMB program publish papers in scientific journals.

BMB research areas include Cell Cycle Control and Cancer, Developmental Biology, Organelle Biogenesis and Development, Protein Folding and Maturation, Protein Synthesis, Structure and Function, RNA Synthesis, Structure and Function and Signal Transduction. BMB graduates have great opportunities for professional careers in many areas of science or advanced training in graduate school, medical school, law school or other form of higher education and training. Take a look at the requirements for the BMB major. All undergrad admissions are handled directly through the UMass Admissions office.

The BMB Fifth-Year Master's Program:
(M.S. Degree Program)
This program is open to BMB majors at UMass by application. You will need to apply to the Fifth-Year Master's Program before graduation, and it is best to speak with your research and academic advisors as early as possible about your interest in this program. As a Fifth-Year Master's candidate, your undergraduate research project is extended or adapted into Master's thesis work under the supervision of BMB faculty. In addition, Master's candidates take advanced level coursework. For application information, contact Dr. Lila Gierasch or your advisor. More information can be found on our BMB Requirements page and at the BMB Undergraduate Academics page.
Doctoral (Ph.D.) Training in the Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Department:

BMB Doctoral training occurs through interdisciplinary graduate programs. Students interested in doctoral training with a BMB faculty member usually apply to the Molecular and Cellular Biology (MCB) Graduate Program. MCB is an interdepartmental program that includes faculty at UMass-Amherst, Amherst College, Smith College and Mt. Holyoke College. MCB members pursue a wide range of biological research problems using strategies, techniques and systems that span the molecular life sciences. All BMB research faculty are members of the MCB Program, and offer doctoral training through MCB.

You can also obtain a doctorate in a BMB lab via a subspecialty graduate program. A subset of BMB faculty also belong to the Plant Biology (PB) Graduate Program, and the Chemistry-Biology Interface (CBI) program.

Applications for graduate programs at UMass are available through the UMass Graduate School.
