BMB Seniors:

You should check your degree progress report on Spire to see if there are any mistakes and anything marked in RED that will NOT be satisfied by the courses you are taking this semester Spring 2008. If you find problems you need to contact Dr. Fitzgerald-Hayes by email (mollyfh@biochem.umass.edu) with a specific explanation of what you think is wrong.

If your graduation date is Spring 2008, but you know you will not be finished with your requirements, you should go to the Registrar's Office in Whitmore and change your graduation date. If you don't do this, you will not be able to register for classes for Fall 2008.

Questions? E-mail Carol Ryan at ryan@biochem.umass.edu; or come by the office, 913G LGRT during normal business hours.

BMB Accomplishments:

Professor Alejandro P. Heuck has been awarded a Biomedical Research Grant from the American Lung Association for his work on "Identifying New Methods to Block Bacteria from Injecting Toxins into Lung Cells," beginning July 1, 2008, for a total of $80,000. The study plans to understand how toxins are injected into the target cell, so that therapeutic agents can be designed to block toxin injection and their ability to harm lung cells, thereby protecting the lung of Cystic Fibrosis patients from the devastating effects of P. aeruginosa infections.

A team of researchers, including Dr. Maura Cannon, has found that the first step in building new plant cell walls is the assembly of a scaffold made of structural proteins. This work was published in the Feb. 12, 2008 issue of The Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences and was selected for Editor's Choice section in the journal Science aswell as by the Journal of Cell Biology for their Research Roundup section.

Professor Alejandro Heuck has been awarded a four-year grant from the American Heart Association for the "Development of novel probes for direct observation of cholesterol levels in mammalian cell membranes," beginning January 1, 2008, for a total of $308,000.

Dist. Professor Lila Gierasch has been nominated as an alumnae trustee at Mount Holyoke College. She graduated from Mount Holyoke with a degree in Chemistry in 1970 and received an honorary degree from the college in 2002.

Prof. Karsten Theis has been awarded a $516,000 Research Scholar Grant from the American Cancer Society for his project entitled "Molecular Mechanism of Transcription-coupled DNA Repair" for the period 1/1/08-12/31/11.
