WELCOME OLD AND NEW BMB MAJORS!
There will be a Meet and Greet Ice Cream Social on Thursday, September 4th at 4 pm in the Lederle Tower 8th Floor Lobby. This is an informal social event at which you can meet the BMB faculty and your fellow students, and hear about the plans our Biochemistry Club has for the upcoming year (and, there's ice cream....)
BMB Undergraduates: Caveats/Reminders
- Classes start on Tuesday, September 2nd. Since some room assignments may change last minute, it’s a good idea to check your schedule on Spire first thing in the morning. Add/Drop ends absolutely at 5 pm on Monday, September 15.
- Normal maximum course load for BMB majors is 20 credits. If you need an overload of credit, you must go to the Arts and Science Advising Office in E24 Machmer and fill out a request form. Do not wait 'til the last day to do this as the forms take time to process.
- Pass/Fail option. An undergraduate may choose a pass/fail grading option for a course which is NOT used as a GenEd requirement, or a major requirement. You can have up to 5 courses graded pass/fail in your undergraduate academic career. You can put this option on yourself in your Spire enrollment. This MUST be done before the end of Add/Drop, 9/15.
INDEPENDENT STUDY
If you are working in a research lab YOU MUST REGISTER for Fall 2008 Independent Study (independent research) courses.
- Non-honors BMB majors must fill out a pink form (LGRT 913G office door) to register for Biochem 296, 396, or 496. This form, signed by the Sponsoring Faculty, MUST be submitted to Ms. Carol Ryan (LGRT 913G) no later than September 11th to allow time to process. Students should discuss course number and the number of credits with their faculty P.I. sponsor.
- Honors BMB majors must fill out the Commonwealth College form (available at Commonwealth College and online) to register for honors independent research courses (Biochem 296H, 396H, 496H). Honors students MUST leave the form with Carol Ryan in the BMB office. After the Chief Undergrad Advisor signs the form, the student must then see a Commonwealth College advisor to submit the form.
- Please understand that if you do not register properly for independent research courses, then you will not receive either a grade or credit for your work in the lab.
We rely heavily on student e-mail addresses to contact our BMB majors with announcements about courses, deadlines and events. Please get in the habit of checking your @student.umass.edu e-mail account frequently, so you don't miss anything!

BMB Accomplishments:
Professor Daniel Hebert will be promoted to full professor as of September 1, 2008.
Professor Jennifer Normanly has an article in the June 20, 2008 issue of the journal Science entitled "Auxin gradients are associated with polarity changes in trees."
Professor Alejandro P. Heuck has been awarded a Biomedical Research Grant from the American Lung Association for his work on "Identifying New Methods to Block Bacteria from Injecting Toxins into Lung Cells," beginning July 1, 2008, for a total of $80,000. The study plans to understand how toxins are injected into the target cell, so that therapeutic agents can be designed to block toxin injection and their ability to harm lung cells, thereby protecting the lungs of Cystic Fibrosis patients from the devastating effects of P. aeruginosa infections.
A team of researchers, including Dr. Maura Cannon, has found that the first step in building new plant cell walls is the assembly of a scaffold made of structural proteins. This work was published in the Feb. 12, 2008 issue of The Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences and was selected for Editor's Choice section in the journal Science aswell as by the Journal of Cell Biology for their Research Roundup section.
